Quick answer

Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) is a light, warm greige: a gray with a soft beige base, and the color Sherwin-Williams calls its best seller. With an LRV of 60.4 it reads light without looking white. It stays neutral in most rooms, can look grayer and flatter in north-facing light, and warms up in south and west light.

Is Agreeable Gray warm or cool?

Agreeable Gray is a warm gray. Its CIELAB yellow–blue value is +5.7, which pulls it toward beige, while its green–red value is +0.3, so close to zero that it shows no real green or pink cast. Sherwin-Williams describes the undertone as beige, and the numbers agree.

That small amount of beige is why it gets called a greige. On most walls it reads as a soft gray with a little warmth rather than as a beige. The company it keeps changes how you see it: next to a crisp, cool white the warmth shows more; next to a creamy white it looks grayer.

How light changes Agreeable Gray

An LRV of 60.4 means Agreeable Gray reflects a little over half the light that reaches it. That puts it in the middle of the light range: light enough for a whole house, with enough depth that the walls don't look washed out next to white trim.

North-facing
Cooler and grayer; can look flat in small rooms
South-facing
Lighter and warmer; the beige shows most
East-facing
Warm in the morning, grayer after midday
West-facing
Grayer by day, warm at sunset

North light is the one to watch. Light from a north-facing window is cool and indirect, so Agreeable Gray loses some warmth and drifts toward a plain mid gray. If you want a north room to stay warm, test it beside Accessible Beige, which has more beige in it. In south- and west-facing rooms the opposite happens: strong warm light brings the beige forward.

Living rooms and whole-house color

Agreeable Gray is a common choice for painting a whole house in one color, and the numbers explain why. Its mid-light LRV and mild undertone mean it changes less from room to room than a stronger beige or a cooler gray, so open-plan spaces and hallways read as one continuous color.

Bedrooms

The beige base keeps it from feeling cold under warm evening lamps, which makes it an easy, restful bedroom wall.

Kitchen cabinets

On cabinets it gives a soft, neutral alternative to white that hides everyday marks better than a bright white. Pair it with a white wall such as Extra White, or go a shade deeper on the island with a color from its own strip.

Exteriors

Sherwin-Williams lists Agreeable Gray for both interior and exterior use. Outdoors, direct sun makes every color look lighter, so on a sunny facade it can read close to an off-white with a warm cast. If you want the house to clearly read as gray from the street, look one or two steps darker on the strip below.

Where to be careful

Dark, north-facing rooms can make it look flat. Very yellow or orange woods also push it to look grayer by contrast. In either case, paint a large sample board and look at it morning and evening before committing.

Agreeable Gray color strip: lighter and darker shades

Agreeable Gray is the lightest color on its Sherwin-Williams strip. One step darker is Anew Gray (SW 7030, LRV 47.4), then Mega Greige (SW 7031, LRV 36.8). The darker end of the strip works well for doors, islands and exterior trim.

Sherwin-Williams lists Agreeable Gray as hex #D1CBC1, RGB 209, 203, 193 and LRV 60.386. Use the hex value for digital mockups and mood boards, but remember that screens shift color: the paint chip and a sample board are the true reference.

Colors that go with Agreeable Gray

Sherwin-Williams' own coordinating colors for Agreeable Gray are a bright white, a soft white and a muted rose:

Incredible White
SW 7028 · LRV 74
Extra White
SW 7006 · LRV 86
Coral Rose
SW 9004 · LRV 28

For trim and ceilings, Extra White gives the cleanest contrast and makes the gray read a little cooler. Incredible White sits much closer to the wall color for a softer, low-contrast look. If you prefer creamy trim, Alabaster will warm the whole palette. For an accent, the darker colors on Agreeable Gray's own strip, such as Warm Stone or Brainstorm Bronze, keep the palette in the same family.

ΔE is the CIEDE2000 color difference between the two manufacturer colors: around 1 is barely visible; 2–3 is visible when the chips sit side by side.

Three comparisons come up more than any other. Repose Gray is slightly darker and cooler: see Agreeable Gray vs Repose Gray. Accessible Beige has noticeably more beige: see Accessible Beige vs Agreeable Gray. And Benjamin Moore's closest answer is a little darker but just as warm: see Revere Pewter vs Agreeable Gray.

Before you paint

  1. Use a large sample. A big painted board shows the color the way a wall will; a small chip can't.
  2. Look at it through the day. Check morning, midday and evening, with the lights you actually use.
  3. Test it next to your trim and floors. Fixed finishes change how warm or gray it looks.
  4. Choose the sheen last. Flatter finishes look slightly softer; see our paint sheen guide.
