How to use these reviews

Start with the LRV filter. It tells you how light a color will read on the wall before undertone even comes into it: whites sit above 75, most popular greiges and light grays between 55 and 75. Then open two or three colors with similar LRVs and compare their undertones, because at the same lightness the undertone is what you will notice.

When two colors look almost the same on screen, check the comparison pages. Each one puts the numbers side by side and explains which room and lighting suits which color.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sherwin-Williams whites are the brightest?

Of the whites reviewed here, Extra White (SW 7006) is the brightest at LRV 85.9, followed by Greek Villa (SW 7551) at 84.2 and Pure White (SW 7005) at 84.0.

What does the LRV number on a Sherwin-Williams color mean?

LRV is light reflectance value, on a scale from 0 (absorbs all light) to 100 (reflects all light). The higher the number, the lighter the color looks on the wall.

Can Benjamin Moore match a Sherwin-Williams color?

A paint store can computer-match any brand's color, but the match is mixed in the other brand's base and pigments, so it can come out slightly different. For a ready-made alternative, each review lists the closest Benjamin Moore colors ranked by measured color difference.
